Slag Crusher is the key component in the process of coal gasification. It is installed between the bottom of the chilling chamber and the hopper to crush slag and fire-proof bricks. the purpose is to avoid the accumulation of slag which will cause the whole system stop.
Slag crusher types and their applications
Slag crusher is a pressure vessel, its top part connects with the bottom of the chilling chamber of the gasification furnace and its bottom part connects with the hopper.
Two kinds of slag crushers are available - one is Jaw slag Crusher, which is primary used for crushing big lumps of slag from the slag pot. The movable jaw is mounted on the barrel, with the fixed jaw make relative movement. Slag is continuously crushed. There are guiding baffles above the movable jaw and the fixed jaw, this measure ensures that all the slag can pass through the crushing system and no accumulation of uncrushed slag above the movable jaw. As the slag fed into the jaw slag crusher, Jaw slag crusher crushes the big lumps of slag into medium size which then goes to next process.
The other one is cone slag crusher, which is ideally used for crushing slag in the secondary process after jaw crusher. The material crushed through jaw crusher will be fed into cone slag crusher.
The cone slag crusher will crush the material into 6 mm to 12 mm size. The material crushed by cone slag crusher becomes mixture of metal contaminates and sand contaminates which will go to the next processes.
The first ever-successful slag crusher plant

The South Dakota DOT research project investigated the effects of concentrated brines of magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium chloride, and calcium magnesium acetate on portland cement concrete. Their study showed that chemical attack of the hardened cement paste is significantly reduced if supplementary cementitious materials are included in the concrete mixture. Both ground granulated blast furnace slag (slag cement) and fly ash were found to be effective at mitigating the chemical attack caused by the deicers tested. In the tests performed, slag cement performed better as a mitigation strategy as compared to coal fly ash.
Steel slag overview
Steel slag is an industrial byproduct obtained from the steel manufacturing industry. It is produced in large quantities during the steel-making operations which utilize Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). Steel slag can also be produced by smelting iron ore in the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). Steel slag can be used in the construction industry as aggregates in concrete by replacing natural aggregates. Natural aggregates are becoming increasingly scarce and their production and shipment is becoming more difficult. Steel slag is currently used as aggregate in hot mix asphalt surface applications, but there is a need for some additional work to determine the feasibility of utilizing this industrial by-product more wisely as a replacement for both fine and coarse aggregates in a conventional concrete mixture. Most of the volume of concrete is aggregates. Replacing all or some portion of natural aggregates with steel slag would lead to considerable environmental benefits. Most of the natural aggregates in the state of Ohio are shipped in from out of the state, whereas large steel slag deposits are locally available. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the durability of concrete made with steel slag aggregates. This research has shown that replacing some percentage of natural aggregates by steel slag aggregates causes negligible degradation in strength. It is shown that as the amount of steel slag is increased beyond 75%; the workability of the concrete mixture became an important issue which eventually requires larger amounts of water reducing admixtures to achieve a minimum slump. The results showed that replacing about 50 to 75% of steel slag aggregates by volume for natural aggregates will not do any harm to concrete and also it will not have any adverse effects on the strength and durability.
