Copper mines
Copper is mined either at open pit copper ore mines or underground copper ore mines. The ore usually contains less than 1% copper and is often associated with sulfide minerals. The ore is ground, concentrated, and slurried with water and chemical reagents.
Zambia is the world's major producers of copper and cobalt. Its production accounted for 3% of world production and 12%, Zambia is the world's major producing gems (particularly emeralds) and one of the countries. Other major minerals include: gold, silver, sulfur, coal, cement, clay and stone, etc.
Concentrate and copper marketing
Copper can be produced as either a primary product or as a co-product of gold, lead, zinc or silver. It is mined in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and primarily consumed in the Northern Hemisphere with the U.S. as a primary producer and consumer.
Copper concentrates produced by mines are sold to smelters and refiners who treat the ore and refine the copper and charge for this service via treatment charges (TC's) and refining charges (RC's).
